Q
What is the CSWIP exam pass mark?
TWI does not publish the pass mark on their official underwater inspection course pages. The pass mark for the underwater certification scheme should be confirmed directly with your TWI-approved training centre or by reviewing the official CSWIP scheme document.
| Level | Theory Format | Pass Mark |
|---|---|---|
| 3.1u | Multiple choice theory + practical assessments | Confirm with TWI |
| 3.2u | Multiple choice theory + practical assessments | Confirm with TWI |
| 3.4u | Part A (MCQ) + Part B + Part C (written) + practicals | Confirm with TWI |
Q
What is the difference between CSWIP 3.1u, 3.2u and 3.4u?
The three CSWIP underwater inspection levels form a career progression pathway. Each builds on the one before it.
| Level | Title | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 3.1u | Diver Inspector | Visual inspection, corrosion, offshore structures, basic NDT |
| 3.2u | Diver Inspector (Advanced NDT) | Ultrasonic flaw detection, MPI, calibration, A-scan interpretation |
| 3.4u | Underwater Inspection Controller | Inspection planning, scheduling, QA/QC, written reporting, work pack preparation |
Q
How do I start the CSWIP 3.1u Diver Inspector certification?
Q
Can I study for CSWIP online?
It depends on the level. The 3.1u and 3.2u courses must be completed in person at a TWI-approved training centre. The 3.4u course is also available online — TWI deliver it in two parts (theory and practical) so you only need to attend a training centre for the final exam.
For all levels, your exam preparation can be done entirely online:
- NDTPrep courses are 100% online — work through them at your own pace
- Designed to fit around offshore rotations and busy schedules
- Available for 3.1u, 3.2u, and 3.4u certification levels
- Access is for 12 months from the date of purchase
Q
I'm new to CSWIP 3.1u or doing a refresher — what's the recommended study path?
Q
I'm a CSWIP 3.1u inspector moving to 3.2u, or doing a 3.2u refresher — what's the path?
Q
I'm preparing for CSWIP 3.4u for the first time, or doing a refresher — where do I start?
The 3.4u exam is heavily written-answer based. You need solid 3.1u and 3.2u foundations before focusing on 3.4u-specific content. Also note the entry requirement for the diver route: you must have held CSWIP 3.1u or 3.2u for a minimum of 3 years with at least 100 logged hours of underwater inspection work.
Q
Do you offer course bundles or discounted packages?
Yes. Individual courses are available separately, and bundled packages offer significant savings for divers covering multiple certification levels.
Q
Do you have a CSWIP 3.1u and 3.2u refresher and renewal guide?
Yes — we've put together a free guide specifically for inspection divers approaching their 3.1u or 3.2u renewal.
- What the renewal process involves
- Which topics to prioritise for revision
- How to structure your study around an offshore schedule
- What to expect on the day
Q
Is NDTPrep affiliated with TWI or CSWIP?

All NDTPrep content is designed as exam preparation support only. Learners are responsible for confirming exam eligibility, official syllabus scope, and certification rules directly with TWI Certification Ltd.
